Using Your Home Espresso Machine
![]() |
Automatic vs. Semi-Automatic Semi-automatic home espresso machines control the pressure and brewing temperature, but rely on the barista to manually control the brewing time. That process requires a little skill and experience, but once mastered, will produce higher quality espresso than a fully automated machine. One last thing: pump-driven machines are far superior to steam-powered. |
Espresso Making Tips
Let your home espresso machine warm up for about 15 minutes before using it. Make sure the filter basket and diffuser are cleaned from the last use. If your machine doesn't have a cup warmer, put your empty espresso cup in the microwave for about 20 seconds before brewing.
Good home espresso machines take around 25 to 30 seconds to brew a 1.5 to 2-ounce cup. Longer brewing times can be altered by using a coarser grind or lighter tamp. Adjust shorter brewing times with a finer grind or harder tamp.
For help in better understanding espresso brewing, we recommend asking a local coffee specialty shop or supplier if they know of any tours or classes for home baristas.
Grinding & Storing
Using a quality coffee grinder is just as if not more important than owning a quality home espresso machine. A burr grinder is an essential tool for the home barista. It uses two grinding disks, one stationary and one rotating, producing a more consistent grind than blade grinders. A grinder should be replaced after grinding 50 pounds of coffee.
Avoid purchasing coffee in bulk. Whole beans will preserve their flavor for about two weeks, ground coffee for several days at the maximum. Always store coffee in a dark, dry area using a vacuum-sealed container.
